100% Banana Fibre
Also known as musa fibre, banana fibre has been used in clothing production since 13th century Japan as the preferred fabric for kimonos and samurai robes. Today, this eco-friendly fabric is used as an alternative to hemp and bamboo and is basically considered carbon neutral.
One of the world’s strongest natural fibres, banana fibre is biodegradable and incredibly durable. The fibre consists of thick-walled cell tissue, bonded together by natural gums and is mainly composed of cellulose, hemicelluloses and lignin.
The modern production process involves mechanical as well as automated mechanical extraction techniques in which sections of the banana plant are cut from the main stem and rolled lightly to remove excess moisture and impurities. A machine consisting of two horizontal beams is then used to extract the fibres, before they’re spun into their final fabrication.
